Smiling Jack's Bar and Grill, Episode 01: Savage Worlds Design Philosophy

Smiling Jack's Bar and Grill launched it's first podcast episode last week, and I personally think they knocked it out of the park. If you haven't heard about this podcast, it's a new, monthly venture from The Game's the Thing's Ron and Veronica Blessing that's dedicated to Savage Worlds.

Here's the summary of the first episode:

In this episode, Veronica, Ron, and Sean kick off the new show with a bang. First they introduced the first of two review segments with Norm “No Relation” Hensley, Ninety Seconds with Norm, in which Norm reviewed the classic, Runepunk. Then they played Ron and Veronica’s conversation with Norm, Clint Black, and Sean Preston about Savage Worlds design philosophy. Next it was time for Norm’s full review of Weird War II. Finally, the crew revealed the details for the first contest at the Grill. The prize? Listen up to find out!

The conversation about Savage Worlds' design philosophy was enlightening as they discussed everything from the purpose and usefulness of plot-point campaigns (PPC). PPCs are an easy way to run a campaign in a Savage Setting and touch on all the defining characteristics of the setting.

They also offer great advice on converting Savaging your favorite setting. The basis of the idea is to not convert, but to adapt the setting, and also to not create new rules for the sake of creating new rules. Let the setting work with the existing rules, but identify only the places in the setting where new rules are really required.

There's also a lot of dicussion about the target audience of the Savage Worlds system. You'll hear Ron, Veronica and Norm discuss how much Savage Worlds accommodates adult gamers.

Seriously, if you haven't already, go listen to it now. Right now.
